“The Start” (STG 157), by Thomas Stevens. It is one of the set of three Horse Racing silks. This is a 1* rarity in the Sprake reference. It’s direct pair is “The Finish” (STG 159). It will also go well with “The Struggle”. The mount is C1 dating it 1893 to 1895. The label is 23+31a and this specified production to 1889. The silk colours are extremely good, and the mount condition too. It is one of the most enduring Stevens’ images and was produced into the C20th. It is more loosely associated with “The Water Jump” (STG 158). This is a fine copy for a collection. 209 mm x 134 mm.
