“The Start” (STG 157), by Thomas Stevens. It is one of the “set” of three, the others being “The Finish” (STG 160) and “The Struggle” (STG159) although there is “The Water Jump” (STG 158) which is a steeplechase scene. Framed in a walnut moulding, with glass to the rear to show the trade label, the silk is in lovely condition, the mount being a little stained to the edges. It is one of the most enduring images and was produced into the C20th. This copy is on a C3 type mount dating to 1895-1898. It is on a 29+34 title label, issued from 1894. The unusual element is the triple title (German and French) for the export market, making it rarer than the usual titled versions.
