“Rev John Wesley” (CL No 230). This excellent image is taken from a miniature on ivory from Romney’s picture that was painted in 1789. It is on a Stamped Mount which, in the Courtney Lewis references is Very Rare. It is an oval portrait and Baxter sought permission to copy it by application to the Secretary (Rev Dr Hoole, who married one of the Chubb daughters) of the Wesleyan Missionary Society. There is no lettering and the picture is applied to a “leather” background. It was the only print produced from the last miniature of this famous gentleman. It was produced from 9 blocks and published on or around the 150th anniversary of his birth. It sold for 1s. It is unlikely that Le Blond ever produced a copy. This is a great opportunity to add a very rare Stamped Mount version of this image to a collection. Stamped Mount 6 1/4″ x 7 3/4″.
