Grant Lady Godiva Picture 1958

This picture is by WH Grant, with the attribution below the silk. It is numbered 974 in the Godden reference and interestingly has a good write up on page 441. Here it is stated that calendars were produced from about 1933. This Lady Godiva image was used as a calendar from 1933 and is of her in St Mary’s Hall, Coventry, with her back to a stained glass window. It was designed by Mr Howes and was one of his first attempts at this sort of work. They were mainly for the benefit of the staff and a few select customers, and were produced both before and after the Second World War. This particular picture was probably produced as a stand alone item for framing and hanging in 1958. I have taken pictures before I framed it in an oak frame which is period and sets it off well. The leather effect mount is not in great condition, but it is stabilised and safe within the frame. The quality of the weaving is quite exceptional and the plinth looks almost in 3D to the naked eye. Note the two insert images of Peeping Tom to the left and right of the statue. The colours in the “glass window” are excellent. There is an attribution woven in at the base of the silk. Framed size is 22 cms x 30 cms.
