Stevengraph called “The Finish” (STG160). The image is the same as “The Struggle” (STG159) and superceded it soon after 1879 when the new title was considered more appropriate. Although not particularly hard to find, as ever the condition is everything, and this is nearly perfect. The silk is in excellent condition, as is the mount, and the colours are vibrant. Originally made at the York Exhibition, it is matched with “The Start”. “The Water Jump” can also be displayed as part of a set of three, but it is not a flat race of course. The mount type is C3, with no credit under the picture. In the Godden reference he has these mounts with the label a 31+32 title variation dating the piece to 1895-1898 (see page 64). However,this displays the 29+34 label dating this to exactly 1894.
