You can choose what you call this unique Stevengraph! The silk is of “The Death” (STG 167), but the German title is of “The Meet” (STG 164), Sammeln. Underneath the erroneous title is “In Seide gewebt” (Woven in Silk). Both titles in gold. Obviously this was an export to Germany that was incorrectly titled. On the back of the mount is the name of the German importer – E Birmes, Crefeld – known now as Krefeld. The rear of the backboard deepens the mystery as it has a French label, so it is possible it was bought in Germany and exported for framing to France. An excellent and unusual example of a Stevengraph.
