Stevengraph of Called to the Rescue

“Called to the Rescue” sub-titled “Heroism at Sea” (STG 179), a lifeboat rescue scene. It forms a pair with “For Life or Death – Heroism on Land” (fire engine scenes). The colour of the crew’s clothing changes in various copies of this picture. A one-star rarity in the Sprake & Darby book on Stevengraphs, this one showing excellent colouring, good mount and overall condition. Unframed within a B type mount used after the close of the York Exhibition from 31 October 1879 to 1886. There is no trade label. Not a particularly rare Stevengraph picture but in lovely condition to commemorate a very special event. That event is celebrated on some very rare cards with the inscription that describes the scene – “In Memoriam, of the eleven brave men of the Life-boat “Eliza Adams” who nobly sacrificed their lives while endeavouring to rescue the crew of the Ocean Queen, off Wells, October 29th, 1880.” The writing on the back relates to the previous framing.
