Naïve Watercolour Portrait 1840-50

Naïve watercolour Portrait of a lady sat holding a flower. The hair style is classic for the period 1840-50 with the side curls coming from a parting down to the neck. This was a popular style for evening wear, and was known as the second style. The waist is pinched in as per the 1840s style as well as the full dress to the ground. Primary colours were avoided, so if the image appears somewhat drab it is due to this fashion statement. The tight sleeve to the elbow, and then out to a bell shape is another costume dating point. Framed in a classic black frame associated with silhouettes, oval brass inner and convex glass. Hanging is a simple ring to the top of the frame. Sqaure frame size 16 cms x 21 cms. Slight flare from the glass whilst taking the picture.
