This cut and painted silhouette by R Grindley, dated 1849, is also embellished with gilt. It is one of the best images I have seen using the gilt decoration. The detail of the period dress is outstanding. I have not found reference to this artist which is a shame as whoever it was displayed real talent. The De La Rue impressed mark to the bottom right consists of the company name plus Bristol Board and the coat of arms to the centre. The board is 9″ x 11″. Framed in a moulding of flat profile with a subtle gilt incorporated slip. The framers were JJ Patrickson & Son Ltd of 247/249 Fulham Road, Chelsea. They operated from 1909 to 1958. A delightful piece.
