Samuel Metford (1810-96) Full Length Standing Portrait of a Lady.

There is a lesson in this picture which one could apply to all antiques, but especially framed pictures. The phrase “original condition” can mean many things. Some dealers are proud to offer items with that description. With framing, we have such superior materiel available to us today that not to use it would be irresponsible if conservation is to be successful. This frame had not been opened since originally assembled. Having done so I was able to remove the wooden backing board that so often discolours the paper it lies against. The back now has a barrier card between the image and the replaced back board. The glass was filthy inside, no surprise, but now cleaned. The lovely frame has been cleaned of all previous paper stuck to the back, allowing adhesive tape to stick well to the wood making a good seal. The glass has been sealed to the barrier card with the image between to prevent the ingress of dirt and thunder bugs. The frame has been cleaned and polished, and a few holes to the top edge filled. We can also be sure that the hangings will not fail! Without changing the general condition of the piece the chances of it being enjoyed for many years to come have improved. A cut paper silhouette mounted on card of a standing lady looking left. Embellished in gold and signed bottom left. Framed in a lovely original rosewood frame with a gilt slip. Dated 1848-50. Many similarities with the other Metford images on the site – sitting lady,  sitting gentleman, and standing boy. Note the same frames, dimensions and sizes. Dimensions are 26 cms x 31 cms outer frame size, 17 cms x 22 cms image size. Metford went to the USA for 10 years from 1834 adopting US citizenship, and then worked in the UK (mostly northern England) until 1865 during which time this portrait was probably produced. After another 2 years in the USA he returned to the west of England. Well known for being a member of the Quaker community much of his work served this part of society. Skilfully executed with the gilt applied with a delicate touch, this is a lovely example of his work. It has the added touch of blue applied to the shoes, bonnet bow and decorative bow.
