Signed Watercolour by George Fall (1848-1925)

George Fall (1848-1925) was a topographer whose work in watercolours is probably best known, although he used oils too. He was trained in Selby and York. His vignette style is easy to recognise. and York was a favourite subject. He also painted in County Durham. His exhibition work was shown in Leeds. Not needing any introduction to art collectors in Yorkshire, he is well known for the detailed elements of his brush work. Although he was prolific it could easily be claimed that many of his pictures have survived with poor colour rendition, and they can tend towards a very blue overall finish.  This image is exceptional as it has retained the migrant red colour. Also, it is not the expected landscape view of York. The church to the left is St Martin Le Grand. The picture was probably painted on the Lendal Bridge, built in 1861. Within a simple single mount and gilt frame this is an outstanding piece of artwork that has survived beautifully.  Frame size 42 cms x 34 cms. Image size 28 cms x 20 cms.
