Tunbridgeware Desk Thermometer by T Barton

Thomas Barton (1819-1903) worked for Edmund Nye until the latter died in 1863. He then took over the business, and since Barton had been a major influence on the success of the Nye business through his innovative designs, this was the natural progression. This exceptional piece shows off geometric patterns and the clear attribution to Barton, Tonbridge Wells on the thermometer bone backing. There are four markings on the right from Freezing through to Blood Heat, whilst on the left is the Fahrenheit Scale. The plain veneer is burr walnut, the base being a double step into a rectangle shape, and terminating at the top with a curved pediment. In completely original condition and being an excellent desk accessory, this is a wonderful opportunity to add an exceptional piece to a collection. 10.5 cms wide x 4.5 cms deep x 16 cms high.
