A beautiful Tunbridgeware mosaic spinning top in rosewood. Toys seldom survived in good condition due to their usage, so this is a rare piece indeed. Beautifully crafted, and it works a treat! Includes whistle aperture, and spinning handle. Mosaic ware was produced in the period 1830-1939, and the design of this item does not enable us to identify a likely maker. It is probable that most manufactories produced these, but not in great numbers. A label is unlikely on a toy either! Although mentioned as being produced in mosaic ware the Austen reference book does not have an image of a spinning top. Neither does Pinto in his book on souvenir woodwares.
