Stevengraph of “For Life or Death – Heroism on Land” (STG 189) one of two fire engine scenes, this being the earlier of the two with the older fire appliance and the four horses. Note the outrider on the fifth horse and the burning building on the left, their destination. The mount is the B type used from the York Exhibition to 1888. The trade label is the 13 title variant when this image was first applied to it, therefore dating it to 2 April 1880. A two star rarity (out of seven) in the Sprake Darby reference book. Framed within a period walnut moulding, this is an attractive picture, forming a pair with STG 179 “Called to the Rescue – Heroism at Sea”.
