Tunbridgeware Stamp Box

This double stamp box has a tesserae decoration of roses to the top. On a dark wood panel it is surrounded by a geometric frame decoration. The sides are also beautifully decorated on a rosewood ground. The bottom is sycamore. It is in wonderful condition, the top and base fitting snugly. They were a popular item, and would not be considered rare, but in this condition they are a challenge to find. By the same token an attribution of maker is very difficult too. The Austen reference book page 129 displays a similar box dated to 1841 thanks to the stamp edition, so mid century would be a good date option. It is one of a number of similarly produced boxes of about the same dimensions and date but with different titles on the top. The site has another example available. Size 2 2/5″ x 1 3/5″ x 7/5″.
