The Hawking Party by GC Leighton d1895

"The Hawking Party" signed George C Leighton, bottom right. This was taken from a painting by Sir Edwin Landseer. Leighton was not a Baxter Licensee but served as an apprentice before working for Gregory, Collins & Reynolds where he became proprietor by 1850. This picture was the subject of the article in the "Art Journal" referred to in "The Story of Picture Printing" by Courtney Lewis (pages 75-7), was the first picture printed by Leighton Bros, and is discussed to a considerable degree. By referring to this, later Leighton work, and the productions of Baxter and his licencees, we can begin to contrast and compare their techniques and effectiveness for ourselves. An important historical item. The lighter patch to the right of the picture is slight flare from the camera.
