The Feathered Tribes of the British Islands by Robert Mudie (First Edition)

First Edition of The Feathered Tribes of the British Islands Volumes I & II by Robert Mudie, Published Whittaker & Co, Ave Maria Lane, London, and Waugh & Innes, Edinburgh, and John Cumming, Dublin, 1834. Baxter’s pictures included – Dippers & Nest (CL No 2), Engraved on Wood and Printed in Colours, by G Baxter; Little Grebes and Nest (CL No 3), Engraved on Wood and Printed in Colours, by G Baxter. The many other fine coloured illustrations are wood-cuts, and it is possible that some were engraved by Baxter. Eagle and Vulture (CL No 4) was used in later volumes, but these First Editions have The Gannet and Golden Eagle as frontispieces. The second edition has no lettering besides the title of Dippers & Nest and Little Grebes and Nest. Ownership writing to the frontispiece pages of both. Boards green embossed, stamped with gilt spine lettering, and spine firm. 379 and 391 pages, list of illustrations (see images). Whittaker advertisements to rear of both. Some spotting, generally clean throughout. Includes a preface by Robert Mudie dated Feb 14, 1834. Excellent copies with all bindings tight. 20.6 cms x 13 cms.
