This is one of an outstanding set of Plates in immaculate condition, of museum quality. This one – “The Gems of the Great Exhibition No 2, CL No 167”. It represents the Belgian Department and consists of three parts that were produced as separate prints. To the left we have “The Faithful Messenger” CL No 177 (J Geefs), then “The Unhappy Child” CL No 178 (Simonis), and finally “Lion in Love” CL No 176 (G Geefs). The centre piece was one of the greatest sculptures of the Great Exhibition. Behind can be seen fine specimens of wood carving as well as hanging carpets. This print was produced in August 1852 from 10 blocks, and was highly praised in the “Daily News” of 3 May 1852. Overall, these were deemed the best sculptures on display. 9 1/2″ x 4 3/4″.
