Tartanware “Lady of the Lake”

Tartanware “Lady of the Lake” by Sir Walter Scott. John Ross & Company, Edinburgh, 1874. 207 pages plus Index to 216 pages. The tartan is Stuart. This is a narrative poem first published in 1810. Set in the Trossachs it is consists of six cantos, each covering a single day, with notes. The poem has three main plots: the contest among three men, Roderick Dhu, James Fitz-James, and Malcolm Graeme, to win the love of Ellen Douglas; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the Lowland Scots (led by James V) and the Highland clans (led by Roderick Dhu of Clan Alpine). The poem was tremendously influential in the nineteenth century, and inspired the Highland Revival. End pages clear and clean, boards in excellent condition with author image to the front and Scott monument to rear board. As with many of these books it has mother of pearl protectors on the rear board. Leather spine with gilt decoration in very good condition, as is the binding. The appended images in the book are albumen (silvered) images. Some spotting to those pages only, not affecting the images. 4 3/4″ x 7″ x 3/4″. Gilt page edges. A fine copy.
