“Winter” after WE Jones (CL No 368), dated 1859, and usually called the “large Winter”, is a companion print to “Summer” (CL No 365), or the “large Summer”. This is on a Stamped Mount, so although printed by Le Blond the certainty of this being by Baxter is reassuring. As ever, the snow scenes using this process bring out the best of Baxter. It is reminiscent of Dutch scenes, and the sunset is a wonderful contrast. Originally printed from 8 blocks and sold for 10s 6d. It was published either Christmas 1858 or 1859. Courtney Lewis classes it as Very Rare on a Stamped Mount. Unframed. This was in the GE Lambert collection, and the quality is outstanding. Just because items are in a collection does not mean that poor framers don’t get their hands on pictures. This picture was inappropriately glued down, and the effect can be seen on the corners of the mount.
