Steven’s Postcard RMS Saxonia

Stevengraph “postcard” depicting RMS Saxonia. Stevens’ cards are distinguishable from those by Grant due to the embossed mount. When framed it is lovely to allow access to the back of the card to allow viewing of the interesting comments of the original senders. Here Alice writes to her friend Sadie Ayer who is, it appears, in the USA. In 1900 Cunard were competing with the British White Star Line, as well as Norddeutscher Lloyd and Hamburg America (HAPAG). Cunard vessels were known for their speed and frequently held the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Hoping to regain this honour Cunard updated its fleet, ordering new liners such as sister ships SS Ivernia and RMS Saxonia, both launched in late 1899. She was the largest Cunard liner up to that time. The vessel operated from 1900-26, was 14,200 tons, and was scrapped.
