Modern Tunbridgeware Leeds Castle by Len Garrett

“Leeds Castle by Len Garrett”. Len came from Saltdean and was educated at Chatham Technical School. After a career with the Admiralty he took early retirement in 1982 during which a visit to the Tunbridge Wells Museum widened his existing interest in wood work. Moving on to using blocks in the traditional Tunbridge ware way he produced bandings and many other objects. In the Austen reference page 133 it mentions “….a recent introduction is a mosaic block of Leeds Castle which he hopes to put into production for sale at the Castle…” This is that piece. We can assume the banding on the frame is his too by both style and the reference, as well as the applied labels au verso. This example had been excessively varnished which did nothing for the image or its’ colours. This was carefully removed and the original brightness restored. 21 .5 cms x 15.5 cms. An unusual and very attractive variant.
