This very pretty floral panel has been framed. The moulding is probably of the 1950’s or 1960’s and sets off the panel well. It had been badly varnished so it was removed from the frame to which it was stuck! After restoring the vibrant colours it was reassembled and the panel was interference fitted with cork so that it can be easily removed. The rear backing was then re-covered. As to why it was framed I am uncertain – there was a gap between the mosaic and the edge of the backing panel that indicated it was a deliberate selection to frame, but we will never know. What is certain is that it is a beautiful item. Whether a Tunbridge ware collector or not this is a very decorative item ready for hanging on the wall or placing in a cabinet. The mosaic was used by Nye and Barton, and was extensively produced in the period 1845-1853 at the time Berlin woolwork designs were introduced to the UK. It is likely this bold design was from one of these makers during that period. This is discussed in detail on page 104 of the Austen reference.
