The Illustrated Family Bunyan. This is an interesting large book for a number of reasons. Firstly, for the beautiful bindings. The pictures show the wonderful tooling. All the pages are gilt edged, as is the title page. There is an introduction by Rev Landels on Bunyan and the illustrations are by Edward Deanes. As the keen collectors of early printing will know the colour illustrations are by Leighton Bros. Other work from the same source can be found HERE and HERE. They were excellent printers as the script in these last two references indicate. Published by James Sangster & Co, London. There are numerous line engravings too. Pilgrim’s Progress is one of the most well known religious texts. A word of warning – don’t drop off to sleep with the book on your chest as it’s weight may do you a damage! Excellent condition, end papers and covers repaired by an HMSO book binder. This is a rare book, and in this excellent condition, even rarer. 686 pages.
