Frith Silhouette Mrs Ann Margaret Wight 1835

A beautifully cut and highlighted silhouette in undisturbed condition. Au verso it identifies Mrs Ann Margaret Wight (or Lambe), born 1802 and died 1894. The silhouette was taken on the eve of sailing for Calcutta in 1835. The original framing was done by Aitken Dott (1815-92) & Son of 26 South Castle Street, Edinburgh. They established their firm there in 1842. The coat of arms for the Lambe name can also be seen. The superb silhouette is applied to the card backing which has a only a little decoration at the base. The gold mount and all the framing attributes are as originally sealed. Three members of the Frith family managed the Royal Victoria gallery (1837-c. 1854). The Mckechnie reference (p265) has an extensive entry, and we have seen that the Friths traveled the country extensively. The trip to Scotland followed their lengthy visit to Ireland. They cut the silhouettes of other members of the Lambe/Wight family on the same visit – Anna Wilhelimina, Mr U Wight, and AJ Lambe. Some of these silhouettes were signed as can be seen elsewhere on the site making this attribution a strong one.
